Brass welding is an indispensable processing technology for repairing and processing copper materials. Welding, also known as welding and picking, is a common process and technology for joining alloys or other thermoplastic materials such as plastics by heating.
Brass weldability
Brass is a copper-zinc alloy. Because the boiling point of zinc is low, only 907 C, it is very easy to evaporate during welding, which becomes the biggest problem in brass welding. Under the action of welding high temperature, the evaporation amount of zinc is as high as 40%, and the evaporation of zinc causes the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of welded joints to decline, and the susceptibility of welded joints to stress corrosion to increase. Evaporated zinc is oxidized into zinc oxide in air immediately, forming white smoke, which brings great difficulties to operation and affects the health of welders. Therefore, ventilation and other protective measures should be strengthened in brass welding places. Brass has poor solderability, which can lead to pore, crack, evaporation and oxidation of zinc. In order to solve these problems, silicon-containing wire is often used in welding, because silicon will form a dense silicon oxide film on the surface of molten pool, which hinders the evaporation and oxidation of zinc and prevents the invasion of hydrogen. After welding, it can be annealed at 470 – 560 C to eliminate stress and prevent “self-cracking”.
Brass welding methods: gas welding, carbon arc welding, electrode arc welding and argon arc welding.
